Windows 10 doesn't like the scanner too much. You do get better at it as you work out what the various options do and settle on parameters that work for you. Scanner works with a Windows 7 desktop running VueScan 9.0.96 without a problem (showing scanner is fine). I've just checked my first Vuescan scans, and they were terrible too.
